The smoke will be dragged through the small slits in the bottom of the drop pipe (which has a handy clip attached), and into the square, beaker base chamber. Add some water beforehand to help cool and smooth the smoke, and add an ice cube to rest on the traps to take it to sub-zero temperatures; just one of the perks of buying an ice bong.
